Technologies influence many different factors from increasing your bases capacity to improving your ships characteristics.
To research technologies you need to build a Research Labs structure.
Once you have a Research Labs, you can start researching.
You can keep building structures at the same time you do research, for example you can keep upgrading your Metal Refineries while researching Energy.
To research Energy:
1) Enter the Bases menu.
2) Click on the Research tab. (fig.1)
3) On the Energy row press the Research button.
